Process for Establishing Sidewalks

  • Building Forms
We start by building forms which will restrain the wet concrete. The forms are made strong to prevent them from collapsing or bulging outwards. These forms are placed on the boundaries of the sidewalk or walkway.
  • Creating Curves
This is made possible using hardboard's. We reinforce them to prevent bulging by concrete as well. Stakes are placed 3 feet apart for forms that are below ground and 16 for forms that are above ground. We cover them during rainy times as they are weakened by it and may destroy the perfect curvy outlines.
  • Position of Stakes
The stakes are kept below the top of your form. This is to make the screeding of concrete possible before pouring it between the forms. Screeding may be hard to carry out with protruding stakes.
  • Base
Creating the base is essential as it will produce a compact surface for the concrete to be added onto it.  First, gravel with sharp edges is erected onto the lowest point of the base. They are placed close to each other with all the available space utilized. Thereafter a layer of soil or sand is placed on top of the gravel in a specified layer of sheet. Our workers then use our available equipment used to keep it compressed and compact. Sand is added in areas than have thin sheets until we are completely done.
  • Pouring of concrete.
Carefully, we pour the amount required for this project. This is carefully laid down between the forms created. The platform is then leveled or screed to properly establish it.
  • Dealing with bubbles.
Air found in the concrete may result in voids during its drying stage. We therefore omit this using our equipment specialized for this case. Screeding of concrete then takes place.
  • Control joints
Cutting deep control joints across the platform is a necessity required for the concrete to prevent it from cracking. Making us on ‘cracks’ thus helps solves this problem as concrete is meant to shrink.
  • Finishing with a broom.
Using a broom helps obtain a slightly rough surface. A smooth surface may be hazardous as it may cause slipping for you as one of the main users.
  • Curing
The more concrete retains moisture, the harder it becomes. Moisture is retained by placing a plastic sheet on top of it.  Water is sprinkled on the surface once in a while when it begins to dry. This is referred as curing.

This is an example of what our company does as one of the many cement contractors in Tracy. Giving you a little bit of closure of these labor-intensive works may help you understand what may be going on at your home exterior. For more information on what we do, please give us a call at
